To find out how a Duck Shoot game works - investigating its algorithms

 Learning Objectives:

To build up resilience and strategies for problem solving

To increase knowledge and understanding of Scratch

 Success Criteria:

I can work out what some of the algorithm does.

I can make the duck wings flap!

All children should be able to:

1 – Open the Sencolewis.co.uk website

2  - Play the Scratch duckshoot game

Most Children should be able to:

Complete 1 - 3

4 - Examine the code and predict the what types of algorithm are needed to make the parts work.

5 - Make the duck wings flap by adding code.

Some Children should be able to: (Greater Depth activities)

Complete 1 - 5

6 – Add multiple costumes of the duck - making a fluid animation.

7 - Change the code to adapt it into their own version of a computer game

Teacher Notes:

Show pupils the Duckshoot Scratch game.   Ch to work out how to change direction and how to fire.   Can the high score be reset?

Ask ch to play the game.   How have the algorithms been programmed?

In whole class discussion, make and test predictions about the algorithms needed.  Can they work out how the gun moves? Arrow flies? Scoring system? How can the duck change colour and how can the new code make the wings flap?

How can the game be improved?
