The Lonely Beast - Literacy Lesson 1 - KS1

Lesson Learning Objectives:  

  1. To explore the story, setting, characters and ideas
  2. To write a sentence that describes what you like best about the story

All children should be able to:

Experience the story and recall parts that they liked the best.


Most Children should be able to:

Empathise with the character and describe the emotions that the character is feeling within different parts of the story.


Some Children should be able to:

List a range of adjectives describing the character, compare personal experiences when they felt the same as the character.

Describe how the character could express their feelings and develop empathy with others

Lesson 1   - KS1

Task 1

Read the story -

Describe the ideas with your child:

Answers:

The Lonely Beast lives alone and is sad.  He/ she may have no parents, no home, no food or drink, no money.  Maybe he is looking for a friend to show empathy.


Task 2 -

What could you do for the beast to show him empathy?

Answers: 

- Buy him some brand new colourful clothes

 - A new shirt - what colours could it be? blue or gold maybe.  When you tough the shirt it changes colour.


Task 3 -

Who is the author?


Writing Task 4 -

How could the beast be feeling at the start of the story?


devastated

lonely

scared

brave

quiet

dangerous


Talk Task 5 -

Tell me about the character - does he have special powers?

Answers - He can breathe underwater

 - He can walked very far on his epic journey

- He walked all day and all night


In the city everyone was scared but they all changed their minds and eventually said hello.

The people let him live in the park where he looked after the plants.


We thought that he felt homesick and predict that he wanted to find new friends.


Conclusion

The cure for loneliness is to have a community around you made of friends and family.

- They understood how he was feeling.

Box out the story using 8 boxes.  Draw a picture in each box to describe the story.
