 Learning Objectives:

To use scratch to create backgrounds and sprites

To spot and fix (debug) errors in your programs.

Success Criteria:

I can play with and "see inside" the Scratch game "sencolewis spaceship"

I can create a new background

I can create a new "spaceship" Sprite

I can fix problems in my algorithm and work out if it will work.

All children should be able to:

1 – Open the Sencolewis.co.uk website

2 - Play the "spaceship" game

Most Children should be able to:

Complete 1 - 3

4 - Choose a new background

5 - Choose a new Sprite

Some Children should be able to:

Complete 1 - 5

6 - Debug their algorithm

7 - Experiment with the code to change their game

This what a blank Scratch programme looks like - the cat is the Sprite and there is no code in the working area - the grey area on the right hand side of the screen

This is my "sencolewis spaceship" code that I have programmed

Teacher notes

Introduce pupils to Scratch - working in pairs - follow the link to the "sencolewis spaceship" programme.

Show how they can access this from any web browser by going to http://scratch.mit.edu and then clicking on Create.

Explain the stage, backgrounds and the sprites (characters).

Explain that the background and sprites can be changed to be anything the pupils want.

Show how the pupils can edit the background. Give them some time to explore the background editor themselves.

Remind the pupils of their work using painting programs in Year 1. Provide time for them to share their discoveries. Correct any misconceptions and ensure all pupils will be able to create their own background, with support if needed.
